Groundwater

Like many other aquifers in Texas, the freshwater that is obtained is used mostly for agricultural and irrigational purposes. The total amount of water from the aquifer totals out to be 121 million gallons per day during 1985. (Barber, 1989) 90% of this pull from the aquifer goes to agricultural purposes. That equals about 110 million gallons per day. The other 10% is shared for public supply to surrounding communities, domestic and commercial use, and industrial, mining and thermo-electric power. The wells within the Seymour typically range in depth of 40 to 60ft. The chart below illustrates the high usage and demand of the aquifers properties.

Figure 5. Groundwater use of the Seymour Aquifer in 1985 (Ryder, 1996).

The water quality of the aquifer ranges from fresh to slightly saline. The aquifer contains 100 to 3000 milligrams per liter of total dissolved solids for the fresh water. The moderately to very saline water projects 3,000 to above 10,000 milligrams per liter of total dissolved solids. Through the aquifer's entirety, it is affected by nitrate and chloride (Nordstrom, 1991)
